The Fontanelli String Quartet is a young ensemble that is particularly interested in performing contemporary music whilst keeping in touch with the great string quartet repertoire. Its members stemming from four different countries (England, Belgium, China and The Netherlands) they are a diverse group, which makes them exciting and is reflected in their repertoire choices.
The Fontanelli String Quartet wants to be a relevant voice in today’s classical music industry. That is why they enjoy performing music by living composers. They have named themselves after Simone Fontanelli, an Italian composer who the quartet know well. They are currently working on his string quartet ‘That Means’.
In March 2013 the Fontanelli String Quartet made its debut at London’s Wigmore Hall performing Anton Webern’s six bagatelles op. 9 and Nicola LeFanu’s second string quartet.
Recently they have made a small concert tour to The Netherlands and Belgium, performing at the Leidsewegconcertseries in Utrecht and at the prestigious Arte Amanti Chamber Music Festival in Maarkedal. Their performance at the Arte Amanti festival sparked the following comment: ‘A quartet of international allure. The players each have soloistic qualities and combine it with great musical intensity.’
They have been selected as Park Lane Group young artists for the 2014 series. On the 9th of january they will have their Purcell Room debut!
